Travel ball coach: Try to win while still developing players

One of the things I can’t listen to anymore is the idea that a program either A.) cares about winning, or B.) cares about player development.

I’m here to say that it’s okay to care about both.

Somewhere along the way, especially in youth travel baseball, this false choice was created. If you try to win, you are labeled as short-sighted. If you focus on development, you’re expected to treat games like they don’t matter.

That’s not just wrong, it’s harmful to players.

When it comes to development, it’s okay to try to win the game. In fact, if you’re not trying to win, you’re removing the very environment where real development happens.

Development Happens Under Pressure

Practice matters. Reps matter. But games, especially competitive ones, are where players are exposed.

It’s easy to execute in a controlled setting. It’s much harder to throw a strike when you’re behind in the count, make a play with runners on, or deliver a quality at-bat late in a game.

Those moments only exist when the outcome matters.

If you remove the importance of winning, you remove the pressure. And if you remove the pressure, you limit development.

Competing Is a Skill

We spend a lot of time on mechanics, but not enough on competing.

Competing is managing emotions, responding to failure, and executing when things aren’t going your way. Those are learned behaviors. They don’t suddenly appear when a player gets older.

They are built over time in environments where winning matters.

Development Doesn’t Stop During Games

Trying to win does not mean abandoning development. It means being intentional.

You can still teach situational baseball, rotate players appropriately, and give kids opportunities in different roles, all while competing.

Good coaching isn’t choosing between development and winning. It’s knowing how to balance both.

Accountability Drives Growth

When teams are trying to win, accountability increases.

Preparation matters. Effort matters. Execution matters.

Players start to understand their role and how their actions impact the team. That’s development.

When winning is dismissed, accountability often disappears with it.

Failure Has Value

Failure is critical to development, but only when it carries weight.

Striking out in a game that matters feels different. Making a mistake in a key moment sticks with you.

That’s where players learn how to respond, adjust, and move forward. That’s how resilience is built.

Players Want to Win

Let’s not ignore reality. Players want to win.

They keep score. They understand the situation. They care.

That’s a good thing.

Our job is not to remove that instinct, but guide it. To show them that winning comes from preparation, discipline, and execution.

The Best Programs Do Both

The best programs don’t choose between development and winning. They do both.

They understand that development shows up in games, and games matter.

This isn’t about winning at all costs. It’s not about sacrificing long-term growth for short-term results.

It’s about creating an environment where development is intentional, competition is real, and winning is a byproduct of doing things the right way.

You can teach. You can develop. And you can still try to win.

In fact, you should.
