The MIAA released its first batch of power rankings this week, and while the baseball tournaments are still a month away, the debates over potential tournament seeding have just begun.
To bring everyone back up to speed, the power rankings at the end of the regular season determine the playoff seeding for the state tournament. The top 32 teams in the rankings, regardless of record, automatically qualify for the postseason. The formula adds the sum of the average margin of victory and opponent rating to compute the overall rating.
Tuesday's release was the first of many throughout the season. Updates are scheduled to come every Tuesday and Friday through the end of the regular season. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the first release is based on a smaller sample size early in the season, so these rankings are likely to change significantly over the next month.
