The Vermont high school spring sports season is a sprint. Games start in mid-April, and within a month and a half, the state tournament has arrived. Elite baseball teams are battling for top seeds as they try and set themselves up for a state championship run with the playoff pairings coming out in a little over a week.
Division I looks like a two-team race for the No. 1 seed. Essex holds an edge over rival CVU in index points, the metric that decides Vermont playoff seeding, helped by the Hornets’ head to head victory.
Division II has to be the most up in the air. Going into Thursday, Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Hartford, Otter Valley and Lyndon were all within half an index point of each other.
Unbeaten Thetford Academy has a strong hold in the top spot in Division III with a significant edge over Woodstock and Enosburg in index points, while Division IV is a two-team race for the top seed between Blue Mountain and Leland & Gray.
