Travel ball coach: Grass is greener where you water it

As highlighted throughout this winter edition, the transfer portal has fundamentally reshaped college athletics. What’s often overlooked, however, is how its ripple effects have reached all the way down to youth sports — particularly baseball.

For decades, youth athletics emphasized development, patience, and earning roles over time. Today, the transfer portal has subtly reframed success as finding the next best situation. At the youth level, that mindset often appears as frequent team changes, frustration with roles, or the belief that adversity is something to escape rather than work through.

When it comes to travel baseball, changing teams isn’t always the answer.

Instead, these are the things worth chasing:

Chase the right coach

Programs matter, but coaches matter more. Great coaches create strong development environments regardless of resources, league, or brand name. Find the coach who teaches, communicates, and invests in players. The player-coach relationship will ultimately shape the travel experience more than any logo on a jersey.

Chase the smallest roster possible

Opportunity drives development and enjoyment. No player thrives sitting on the bench. A 10U team carrying 14 players limits growth no matter how competitive the schedule. Smaller rosters mean more reps, more responsibility, and more meaningful learning moments.

Chase where your child will be happiest

Every athlete is motivated differently. For some, it’s playing with friends. For others, it’s competing at the highest level available. Don’t assume the “top team” automatically delivers the best experience. Listen to your child, and align the environment with what motivates them.

The transfer portal has changed the landscape, but the fundamentals of development remain the same. Growth comes from consistency, trust, and opportunity — not constant movement.
