After 30 seasons, 236 wins, 10 postseason appearances, and two Connatonic League titles, Matt Sawyer has decided to step down from his post at Williston Northampton coach. He will continue in his other on-campus duties, including English teacher and assistant football coach.
Williston Northampton has chosen Andre Marrero as Sawyer's successor. Marrero comes in with a strong baseball background as a player, first starring at West Springfield High (Mass.), before doing a PG year at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, and then moving on to have a solid career at Quinnipiac University.
Sawyer says his reason for relinquishing the position is based on family obligations. His son, Will, is a senior football and baseball player at Trinity College, and his daughter, Anna, is a sophomore lacrosse player at Connecticut College.
"That was definitely the main reason,'' said Sawyer. "While I still loved the coaching aspect, I felt like I was not as excited about the recruiting part of the job, which has definitely changed a lot over my 31 years. I wear a lot of hats here, and I was not able to give as much attention to finding players as I would've liked.
