WORCESTER, Mass. -- King Philip won its first state championship in program history Friday with a 4-1 victory over Milton in the MIAA D2 state championship at Polar Park.
No. 11 King Philip (17-8) entered the state-title game with some unfortunate recent history against No. 4 Milton (18-7), falling to the Wildcats in both the 2022 and 2023 championship games. King Philip's only other appearance in a state final came against Hudson in 2002.
This year, King Philip proved to be too much for Milton, thanks in large part to the efforts of Matt Labriola '27, who was a top player all through the regular season and brought his game to a new level in the playoffs.
Labriola locked horns with Babson commit Ryan Kelly '26, a Milton High senior, in the championship game and came out on top. Here's a look at the pitching matchup.
