WORCESTER, Mass. -- Georgetown earned Massachusetts' first state championship on Friday with a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Boston English in the MIAA Division 5 championship game at Polar Park.
The Royals' win doesn't make a lot of sense on paper. They overcame a 2-0 seventh-inning deficit after getting completely shut down by English's starting pitcher, Jaurel Melo '27. The right-hander confounded Georgetown hitters to the tune of 5 ⅔ no-hit innings with 14 strikeouts. Only three batters put the ball in play against Melo.
However, Melo struggled with his command, issuing eight walks while throwing just 59 of 119 pitches for strikes. That forced a call to the bullpen from English coach Christian Ortiz.
That's when the game got interesting, and Georgetown's persistent pressure forced cracks in English's foundation. Georgetown eventually prevailed despite having just one hit to English's six and making four errors to English's one. Here's a look at the game's key players.
