The Red Sox were eliminated from the 2025 MLB postseason at the hands of the Yankees, local boy Cam Schlittler (Walpole, Mass.) pitching a gem for the opposition in the biggest game of his life. New England baseball parents likely nodded along, thinking that’s an achievable career path if everything works out for their child.
It all seems doable if everything breaks perfectly, right?
After all, Schlittler wasn’t the top Massachusetts high school prospect in his class, and even took the loss as a senior in a 2019 MIAA D1 state tournament game against the state’s top prospect, Sebastian Keane. Schlittler didn’t get recruited by SEC or ACC schools, so he landed at Northeastern, where he surpassed expectations during a solid three-year career.
He got drafted in the seventh round in 2022, a lanky 6-foot-6 right-hander who, at the time, threw in the high-80s to low-90s. Yankees scouting director Matt Hyde, a resident of Canton, Mass., stuck his neck out for Schlittler on draft day. Five years later, Schlittler buried a depleted Red Sox lineup and gave New England baseball prospects the blueprint for shining on the biggest stage.
