Cheshire Academy Head of School Tom Woelper notified the families of the team's players this afternoon that head coach Anthony Giano and assistant Pete Katynski were relieved of their positions, effective immediately.
Giano was placed on leave March 30, sources told New England Baseball Journal, after instances of underage drinking among Cheshire Academy players during the team's spring trip to Orlando, Fla., from March 14-20. Giano reported the instances to the administration, and some players left the trip early as punishment.
""I assure you that this decision was not made lightly," Woelper said in his note to families. "Through our investigation, we determined that certain leadership practices and elements of team culture were inconsistent with the values we uphold as an educational institution."
Giano declined to comment when reached by New England Baseball Journal. Woelper wrote in his announcement: "While I recognize there may be questions, please understand that personnel matters are confidential."
