Two of the most accomplished prep school coaches in New England, Deerfield Academy skipper Pat Moriarty and former Phillips Andover coach Kevin Graber, will lead the coaching staff at Masters Academy International when the sports-centric academy opens in the fall.
Moriarty, who helped build the Deerfield program into a powerhouse in New England, will not renew his contract with Deerfield after it expires on July 1. Graber left Phillips Andover in January to support a family health issue in Arizona, where his wife and daughter continued to reside after the coach's two-year stint in the Chicago Cubs organization in 2023 and 2024.
The career transition for Moriarty and Graber brings instant credibility to a new baseball model in New England, an IMG Academy-like experience with year-round baseball specialization. Masters Academy will play a 20- to 25-game schedule in the fall before expanding to a 40-game schedule in the spring.
"It's not for everybody," Moriarty said. "The goals and expectations for recruits have changed in the last three to four years, in terms of what they want to get out of the prep experience. This allows students to specialize. I heard from so many parents, 'Johnny would love to come to Deerfield, but what is he supposed to do in the fall and winter?' The answer is that we're not allowed to coach out of season."
