Marianapolis Prep saved its best for last by capturing the New England Small School Tournament Robert D. Dickerman Division championship over the weekend.
The Golden Knights pulled off the improbable, slipping past Greenwich Country Day 3-1 in the finale, played on Friday at Trinity College's Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium. It marks the school's second New England Small School crown in three years. The Golden Knights fell to Hamden Hall Country Day in last year's title tilt.
On the road to the championship, Marianapolis Prep defeated The Wheeler School (6-1) and top-seed Berwick Academy (2-1).
"This was a special season on several levels,'' said Golden Knights head coach Nick Buoniconti. "We were trying to get our players to believe in the process. Once they believed, the magic started to happen. I always believed this group of players had the talent to succeed. All they needed to do was go out and compete and play the game they love. As it turned out, that theory was spot-on as our confidence was solid but humble.''
